Misal Pav Recipe

Misal is made with matki or moth beans and sometimes potatoes are also added. It's a very spicy and tasty dish famous in Maharashtra. There are many variations to misal, this recipe is the way I make it. I have made a misal recipe in Hindi.

Misal is ideally made very spicy with lots for spices and a lot of oil floating on the top( called tarri or kat). It's served with pav, onions, farsan, and fresh coriander leaves.

Ingredients:

  • 350 gms Boiled Moong & Matki
  • 3 med cubed Boiled Potatoes
  • 3 med sliced Onions + 2 finely chopped Onions
  • 2 med chopped Tomatoes
  • 7-8 Garlic Cloves
  • 1 inch chopped Ginger
  • 1/2 cup Desiccated Coconut
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 3-4 tbsp Red Chilli Powder
  • 2 tbsp Misal Masala or Garam Masala or Goda Masala
  • 2 1/2 tbsp Coriander Cumin Powder
  • Pinch Asafoetida/ Hing
  • Oil as required
  • Water as required

Method:

1) Take moong and matki or moth beans and 3 potatoes in a cooker, add 2 cups of water, add a pinch of turmeric and salt and cook for 2 whistles.
2) Heat a pan on medium flame, add desiccated coconut and dry roast until golden. Remove it in a plate, let it cool down
3) Add onions, garlic and ginger, and dry roast till the raw smell disappears, add tomatoes and roast till it's soft and mushy. Let this mixture cool down.
4) Now grind coconut mixture and onion-tomato mixture into a smooth paste.
5) Take a Kadai, heat 3 tbsp of oil, add a pinch of Asafoetida and add finely chopped Onions. Saute till onions turn translucent.
6) Add the paste to Kadai, and mix it. Add all dry spices to the mixture and give a nice mix.
7) Add 3 cups of water to the mixture as misal has to be of little watery consistency.
8) Add cooked sprouts and potato to the mixture and let it simmer for 8-10 minutes.
9) After a few minutes, you can see the oil floating on top, that's called tarri or kat.

Optional step
You can make tarri or kat separately as I made it because not everyone can eat spicy food. I made the spicy tarri separately. The above misal will be medium spicy. If you do not want separate tarri, add all the spices to the above mixture. I have added spices separately for making this tarri

1) Heat a pan and add 3-4 tbsp of oil. Add 1/2 cup of coconut, onion, tomato paste, and let it simmer for 3-4 minutes.
2) Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, coriander-cumin powder, misal masala, and salt, and give it a nice mix.
3) Add 1 1/2 cup of water and let it simmer for few more minutes until you see oil floating on top.
4) Switch off the flame and your tarri is ready.

For serving:

1) Take misal, add tarri on top of it.
2) Add lots of onions and farsan
3) Add coriander leaves and enjoy with pav.
